How To Turn Your Bathroom Into a Spa and Sauna

Spa days don’t necessitate leaving the house. Create a home spa experience with our 8 pampering tips, which include a lesson on faking a home sauna.

It may seem illogical, but a lack of access to the spa doesn’t equate to not having a spa day. All you have to do is bring the self-care to your home. With the right skin and body care products, you can turn your bathroom into a spa and sauna for the ultimate relaxing experience. You might even find you prefer your home spa to the real thing—after all, there’s no need for small talk or wearing anything other than a robe. The next time you’re feeling stressed or need a couple of hours to yourself, set up shop in the bathroom with a few pampering essentials (like your favorite Kiehl’s face mask and follow these tips.

1. Set a Spa-Like Scene

The difference between an okay spa experience and an amazing one all comes down to ambiance, and the same is true of an at-home spa. If your bathroom looks and smells exactly as it always does, you won’t exactly feel like you’ve been transported to a high-end spa. You need to set the scene. Start with music, turning on your favorite relaxing tunes. You can search for spa music playlists, but any calming melodies will work.

Harsh lighting can really take you out of the moment and bring you back to reality. Dim the lights and start burning a few candles. The smell of lavender instantly evokes thoughts of the spa, so lavender candles are a prime pick. Cucumber and citrus scents are also favorites for home-pampering days.

To complete the spa aesthetic, set your fluffiest towels and a pair of slippers near the tub. They’ll be waiting for you after your bath, which is up next.

2. Take a Relaxing Bath

On normal days, you rush through a shower with the sole purpose of getting clean, but this isn’t the time for that. Pamper yourself with a bubble-filled bath that lasts longer than a few minutes. Start filling the tub with warm water, then add some Bath and Shower Liquid Body Cleanser, which can be used to fill your bath with foam and also doubles as a body wash.

Once the tub is full and the water is bubbling, turn off the faucet and settle into the tub to relax. Sink below the water, and try to clear your mind. If you find it hard to shut off your thoughts, you can listen to a podcast instead of music. It may not make for a traditional spa day, but this is all about what works for you.

Use your time in the tub to take care of your skin, too. The number of spa treatments that promise smoother skin is exponential, but you can experience the same results at home with a little scrubbing action. Gently Exfoliating Body Scrub, which is available in grapefruit scent, gently yet effectively exfoliates to leave your skin feeling silky soft.

If you’ve exfoliated recently, focus on cleansing instead. The vanilla- and almond-scented Creme de Corps Smoothing Oil-to-Foam Body Cleanser is a Kiehl’s-favorite because of its ability to leave skin feeling supple and velvety smooth. It’s more indulgent than your standard bar soap, and a home spa routine is all about finding little indulgences to pamper yourself with.

3. Enjoy a Scalp Massage

Whether you decide to wash your hair or not is up to you, but we’ll insist on one thing either way: giving yourself a scalp massage. You can use your fingers to massage, taking your time and closing your eyes, so it’s ultra-relaxing. Start at your hairline, just above your temples, and massage your way backward, using firm pressure. If you bring shampoo into the equation, not only will the massage make for a self-care moment, but it can also help with buildup.

4. Turn The Bathroom Into a Home “Sauna”

A real home sauna may not be in the cards, but you can fake one in your bathroom. This way, you don’t have to book a spa appointment or head to the gym every time you’d like to use a sauna. To get a similar effect at home, make sure the bathroom door is closed and turn on the shower, so the water coming out is as hot as possible. Don’t get into the shower as the hot water could scald and dry out your skin.

To stop the steam from escaping, close the windows and plug the space beneath the door with a towel. When the room starts to get steamy, that’s your cue to sit back and relax. Turn off the water and enjoy the warmth filling the bathroom. Sit for about 10 to 15 minutes.

5. Follow With a Cool Rinse

Steamy skin treatments and sauna sessions are traditionally followed with a cool rinse. Hop into the shower to do the same at home.

6. Moisturize All Over

Take advantage of your wet skin, and use this time to moisturize. In case you didn’t know, you can trap moisture by applying lotions and creams directly to damp skin instead of drying off completely beforehand. Leaving a spa day with soft, hydrated skin is the goal, so we would say this step is a must.

Start by applying a luxurious body butter, like Creme De Corps Soy Milk & Honey Whipped Body Butter, all over. It absorbs quickly and feels light on the skin, all the while providing rich, long-lasting hydration.

Moisturizing your hands and feet is also important for the full spa experience. You can use Deluxe Hand & Body Lotion to tackle all your moisture needs.

7. Use a Face Mask

A day full of pampering and self-care isn’t complete without a face mask. Smooth Avocado Nourishing Hydration Mask over your face and let it sit for 15 minutes. The formula includes avocado fruit extract, avocado oil, and evening primrose oil and has a rich texture that’s inspired by a ripe avocado. Its hydrating formula conditions skin and leaves it feeling replenished and nourished.

To take things to the next level and feel like you’re receiving a celebrity facial, cut up a few slices of cucumber and place them over your eyes while you wear the mask. Now, it’s just like you’re in a movie makeover scene.

8. Get Ready For Bed

One major perk of bringing the spa to you is that when you’re feeling so relaxed your limbs are limp, you don’t need to get dressed and drive home. Instead, you can keep your blissful state going and settle down in your comfiest pajamas.

Midnight Recovery Concentrate Face Oil

Put on silk pjs and those cozy slippers you laid out earlier, and you’re almost ready to slip between your sheets. But first, apply Midnight Recovery Concentrate Face Oil. It will replenish skin overnight, which is when it’s most receptive to repairing itself from daily aggressors.

Kiehl’s Expert Tip: To upgrade your nighttime routine, use a skincare tool (such as a jade roller) to spread the oil over your skin, giving yourself a facial massage in the process.

9. Sip on Lemon Water

Every good massage or spa service ends the same way—with being offered a refreshing glass of water that’s (hopefully) fruit-infused. Prep a glass of lemon water for yourself ahead of time and have it ready for when your home spa day ends.
