Rated 5 out of 5 by from Gorgeous animalic musk. Just received my new bottle of Kiehl's Original Musk Oil. It smells identical to the same product I purchased 12 years ago, so I am mystified by those who say the smell has changed. Kiehl's is famously one of the more "animalic" solinote musks on the market, which is to say it has a delicate, quasi-sebaceous fetor to it that serious musk lovers prize. It is not perfumey, floral, headshop-py or "laundry-clean" in character, but rather a close analogue to real deermusk (now legally banned and rarely used in fine perfumery). The oil has a pleasantly thick viscosity to it, and a little goes a long way; very little sillage, but extremely tenacious substantivity. Wear it solo for its cozy, reassuring muskiness, or apply it as an under-layer to your favorite fine perfume, for added animalic richness. This is gorgeous stuff.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from For all those wondering There WAS an ingredient change. This is because the 'real musk' was outlawed by the US years ago (I believe it's deer musk, you have to spend a few hours on the internet to find these details). So the ingredient is now a synthetic musk, which is not the same, but the support people monitoring this review board are just posting a canned reply anyway. The worse news is that that ingredient was banned for all musks and musk oils, not just this one, so you can't get authentic musk anywhere at this point.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Does Not Smell The Same I have been using this oil since the 70s . I use other fragrances but always go back to purchasing this, I love the musk body lotion and this combined. I just purchased both over the weekend and returned the oil. This does not smell the same. I thought maybe my body chemistry changed but after reading these reviews I think not. I did purchase the roller-ball want to see if this still has the incredible and to me intoxicating scent I remember from so long ago.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from STILL THE ORIGINAL SCENT TO ME! I don't understand how these critics are saying the scent has changed. I have been using Kiehl's Musk for at least 25 years, or more, and have not noticed any change in the way it smells. As a matter of fact, my grandson said, just the other day, "I love the oil you wear, and every time I smell anything similar, I say, "That smells just like my Nana!" I will never stop using your Musk - I love it!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Must Concur I have been a Kiehl's customer since 1972 and the reviews about the change in musk oil are correct. Unfortunately. I imagine the original product(s) needed have become too costly or hard to mass produce, but if I could purchase a special order of the REAL Original Musk oil I would pay the additional charge. Please advise. Thank you

Rated 1 out of 5 by from PLEASE MAKE THIS OIL WITH THE ORIGINAL FORMULA I have been regualry wearing this musk for 10 years. I have one new bottle left from an online purchase I made in April 2017. Today, I went into a store to compare. Without a doubt, this musk oil is a different product than it used to be. The new formula is much lighter and sweeter than the original. The texture is the oil is thinner than the original. Why is this product not sold as an “updated” or “new” formula?? Do you intend on changing back the original formula? Please be honest.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Different, yes. Terrible, no. So before I go any further I have been wearing this fragrance for the past fifteen years and yes, it is different. No amount of messages from Kiehls saying "Please know there has not been a change to this scent" is going to convince me. I still have a bottle of the old stuff and a bottle of the new stuff and it is different. The oil is thinner, does seem to have a bit less scent to it and a slightly sweeter smell. SO there's the bad. Here is the good. Slightly less scent is not that big of a deal, it's not like this stuff was the stinkiest stuff in the world before. It's why so many of us wear it. I don't like smelling like I just got hosed down with overpowering fragrance. We all know that guy, nobody likes him. It still smells great, I still get comments daily and I will continue to buy it. FYI, if you want a stronger smell, pair it with the body wash or the moisturizer and you're good to go.

Can you mix this into a hair gel and apply to hair ?

Asked by: Sl6141
Hi there, thanks for your inquiry! We do not suggest mixing the Musk Essence Oil into hair gel because it has not been tested to be applied to the hair area. We hope this helps and that you can use our products with great satisfaction!

I am a huge fan of Egyptian Musk. And have tried so many versions of it. Is this supposed to be Kielhls version of it?

I have literally tried dozens upon dozens of versions of this unique fragrance. It’s become a hobby of mine and an obsession. Some how my search has lead me here. I really hope someone has the answer and can help me. Thank you. Mike
