Rated 5 out of 5 by Probably the Best Yes first off, the smell. This isn’t T&H’s 1805. To me it smells closest to Elmer’s glue. It’s not bad per se, it’s just not great. I think it’s an acquired smell and I’ve come to be comforted in the smell. The tingly feeling is great and this has produced the least amount of razor burn I’ve experienced. Make sure you know how to lather also – because this cream requires very, very little and that mitigates the smell. Plus for me, I always follow up with things that smell good so it doesn’t really matter to me. The ingredients produce a nice cooling, tingle effect on the face that really makes a difference. I know there are schools of thought that say to stay away from that type of stuff in shaving cream because it actually causes your pores to close and all that, but the soothing benefit far outweighs any non-perceptible changes in my pores. A bit about myself. I used an electric shaver for pretty much as I’ve shaved – mmm maybe 13 years? For the past year I’ve been experimenting in the whole wet shave thing. I’ve come to view it kind of like minimalist running – why bother? I know people cite you get a closer shave, but that’s not my experience. My top of the line, self-cleaning Braun gets just as close. I’ve used straight razors, safety double-edged, and everything up to 6-blades. Not one is as convenient as an electric shaver. This is not to say that I don’t enjoy the whole process of a wet shave. It’s more relaxing and my night time skin ritual is kind of like my meditation time; it’s very cathartic and allows me to rebalance. I’m sure I’m not alone on this. I have acne-prone, oily skin and to top it off, I get razor burn by thinking about shaving. Pre-shave oils, no matter how they claim to not clog pores, always clogs my pores. I’ve tried many different shaving creams and thrown many away. Honestly in that throwaway list resides the Blue and White Eagle from Kiehl’s. Those were useless for my face and took days to recover from that razor burn. Oh well, I tried. There are three that I like: Truefitt & Hill’s 1805 (like every male on the planet who has tried it), AoS’s Kelp, and this. Far and away this provides me with the better shave. If you don’t know how to lather, I suggest you spend a couple hours researching on the YouTube and Badger & Blade. I thought I knew what I was doing and I most certainly did not. I’m not going to get into here, but once I finally figured out how to properly lather my brush in my bowl this became the stuff of legends. It’s not the best smelling shaving cream – we’ve established this. Is it the worst? Actually it may very well be. But it’s not disgusting… it’s just not nice. Also, if lathered properly the smell is mitigated and the softer medicinal smells are released. I prefer a shaving bowl so I swirl a damp brush lightly in the tub of shave cream for about 15 seconds. When I take my brush out it looks like it has almost nothing on it. I then proceed to whip up the lather in a shaving bowl with about one half teaspoon of hot water. After a minute or so I have enough lather to last the whole shave. Also make sure you when you apply it on your face to take time to continue to lather on your face. Rushing will get you nowhere, plus the added time allows the hair to soften and prepare your skin. Shaving is a joy with this cream and I never need to worry about my razor clogging when I properly lather, and I have never cut myself with this lather. All this being said, I think I will be switching back to my electric. I find that if I don’t wash my face after I shave (no matter with what cream or method) I have a greater tendency to breakout. So I struggle with washing my face before and after a wet shave and often just wash after with is like blasphemy if you ask the ‘pros.’ I never wash before my electric shaver and it always gives me a close, razor burn free shave. I then cleanse afterwards with a clarisonic and my skin is perfect. As long as I continue to keep up cleansing, I can keep my acne at bay. It’s a matter of finding what works with your skin. After a year of heavy experimentation in the wet shave world I’ve discovered that this shaving cream combined with a two-blade safety razor, followed by the blue herbal line, works best for my face. But I still don’t see a point continuing to wet shave. Maybe I can continue to get more proficient on the straight razor and “treat” myself on weekends. I don’t know. Regardless, as far as shaving creams go, this has my skin’s endorsement as the best for sensitive shaves. 3/11/15
Rated 1 out of 5 by Best Purchase Ever... ...if you like waking up every morning to the smell of old sweat socks. For the temptation of $16.00 and reclaiming a moment of my youth shopping at Kiehl's in NYC, I went for this product. Three issues made this an experience I won't repeat: 1. The aforementioned smell. It claims "lavender extracts." Is there lavender in sweat socks? 2. The oily consistency. 3. And this might be a benefit, the remarkably short life of a such a seemingly large tub. I'm going back to Truefitt & Hill. 3/8/15
Rated 5 out of 5 by shaving soap search for sensitive skin I was at first disappointed when I pulled the top and didn't smell any menthol, camphor, or lavender...I like scented soaps. I soaked my brush in hot water, swirled it around, and lathered it on...it instantly cooled down...proof of the menthol and camphor content. Shave was smooth, no drags or pulls, and stayed wet. I will forgive the lack of scent...this gave me the best shave ever. I use a Semogue boar-bristle brush and PolSilver Super Irridium Blades in a 1949 Gillette Super Speed. 9/22/14
Rated 5 out of 5 by Best shave cream... This weekend was my first purchase of a Kiehl's product . I bought the Lite Flite and I will never use anything else. I bought this at Belk's in Winston-Salem, NC. I wish they had samples of other products as well. Great brush cream...great lather for smooth shave. 6/9/14
Rated 5 out of 5 by A great step in personal male grooming This is a great product to use in conjunction with a brush and warm water. I have never had a closer shave nor one with the least number of new blade nicks. The scent is understated, perfect for a male product, yet pleasant. The process of shaving becomes a grooming joy once more with this product and not just a chore. 5/20/14
Rated 5 out of 5 by My go to cream I have nothing but good things to say about this cream. Soothing from the get go with a very creamy consistency right out of the tub. Allot goes a long way on the brush so ok to use sparingly with tons of lather. I do not care for heavy scent in my shave creams so this product delivers if you are in the same boat. This is not the most inexpensive cream but I have spent more on poorer performers in the past. I mix the cream in a bowl shaving with a DE razor great results this is my new staple! 4/27/14
Rated 5 out of 5 by Just excellent This and a badger hair brush is the only way to shave! 4/27/14
Rated 5 out of 5 by First Day of use review This morning was the beginning of the rest of my life. I use to hate to shave, now I look forward to it. Day ONE was this morning, silvertip badger brush is still on order - coming in two days but I couldn't wait, so I lathered in my hand. Clearly the best shave I've ever gotten, and thats without a brush and using a power glide blade. I can only imaging how luxurious the shave will be with the brush, and one day I may move to a DE razor. I had sampled Art of Shavings cream, but this is much nicer at 1/3 the cost. My days of research and reading every review paid off, Kiehls is the best. 2/12/14
