This toner is designed to soothe and refresh the skin as it removes any excess of dirt, debris, or cleanser residue. This unique, alcohol-free preparation is formulated with a Tea Tree Oil base and a special blend of beneficial essential oils and herbal extracts such as Aloe, Yarrow, and Sage to produce a calming, yet mildly astringent effect. Created for those with normal to oily skin with a tendency toward occasional blemishes, this naturally-balancing toner also contains Panthenol (pro-vitamin B-5) as well as Tea Tree Extracts, which are known for their beneficial antioxidant properties.
Sage Extract is obtained by steam distillation from the flowering tops of the Sage plant, yielding a a pale yellow liquid that smells and tastes like Camphor. It is also beneficial for oily skin.
Tea Tree Oil is derived by distilling the leaves of the Southern Australian Melaleuca tree. This aromatic, almost colorless oil penetrates quickly and is beneficial for problematic skin. Australian Aborigines have been known to use it to treat skin, while European explorers once used it as an herbal tea.

As I said in another product review, I have just been introduced to Kiehl's products. Trying to battle my formerly combination and now permanently oily and acne-prone skin, I accidentally visited the Kiehl's counter. I knew that I preferred botanical-based products, but with so many botanical lines on the market, how do you choose? It was a shot in the dark with Kiehl's, though I felt a little more confident knowing that the company had been around for so many years. I bought the Rare-Earth Oatmeal Milk cleanser and the Tea Tree Oil toner. As I already mentioned in that product review, it has been working very well. And, the Tea Tree Oil Toner is nothing short of a miracle for me! I knew the tea tree oil was an effective remedy against blemishes, but it was a little bit challenging to find in the right formulations. I have definitely found the right formulation in this toner. It seems to have just the right amount of tea tree oil plus so many extra beneficial ingredients like grapefruit extract, lavender, and sage, which all seem to work in tandem to purify my skin after cleansing. What was different about this toner compared with other toners I had used in the past was that it was so non-irritating. The fact that it is alcohol-free is a bonus, because acne-prone skin doesn't react well to loads of alcohol. Also unlike other toners, I don't need to use a large amount for results. I just put a fair amount on one cotton square and rub gently. I just put a fair amount on one cotton square and rub gently. Even though the cotton pad seems dry after using on half of my face, there is plenty more product left to distribute -- it's just a less watery, more oil-like consistency. It's very potent and I can see the results in the short time that I have been using this toner. There's no doubt that it cleans my pores, but it also seems to eradicate existing acne. Funny thing is, it keeps working throughout the day, even under my moisturizer and makeup. I can actually feel a slight tingle in my face when cool air blows on it. The most satisfying thing is that I check my face periodically throughout the day, and I notice that blemishes are actually decreasing throughout the day! When I first open the bottle, I get a whiff of the typical antiseptic smell of tea tree oil and unmistakable eucalyptus. But after I have the toner to my face for a while, it leaves a much more pleasant, refreshing smell, almost a sweet aroma. I can smell the lavender, coriander fruit, grapefruit, and rosemary, but no longer the tea tree. So it's actually a nice after-smell. Although the formulation itself is oil-like and it contains so many essential oils, it is a very effective astringent and really seems to keep my skin clean throughout the day. But it never irritates or dries it out, which isn't easy given my sensitive skin. I am definitely going to keep using this and hopefully it will help keep blemishes at bay for good!
